This Level 1 study programme is ideal for school leavers considering a career as a motor vehicle technician. You will learn skills and gain knowledge in the motor vehicle servicing, maintenance and repair in our state-of-the-art Advanced Technology Centre, using tools and equipment that match those found in the most modern, commercial motor vehicle servicing and repair workshops.

This module will ensure you are able to ensure your own safety and that of others while working with a wide range of tools, equipment and chemicals commonly used during vehicle body repair and vehicle paint spraying jobs.Introduction to Low Carbon Vehicle Technologies in the Automotive IndustryThis module aims to encourage you to realise how your actions in driving vehicles can impact the environment and some of the measures vehicle manufacturers are taking to  reduce carbon outputs.Preparation to Become a Vehicle DriverThis unit will provide you with the knowledge which learner drivers need to know before they begin to drive. This includes applying for their first driving licence, becoming familiar with the Highway Code, arranging driving lessons and the booking of a driving test.Applying Engineering Techniques in an Automotive EnvironmentThis unit will provide you with the knowledge and skills to use engineering techniques to include: measuring, marking out, and drilling. You will use a variety of fixing methods to accurately fit vehicle number plates.Vehicle EnginesThis unit introduces you to the principles of Spark Ignition engine system components and operation and includes the requirements for carrying out routine engine maintenance. You will also carry out practical activities of removing and refitting a cylinder head to an SI engine.Vehicle Air and Liquid Cooling SystemsThis unit introduces you to the principles of engine liquid cooling and air-cooling components and operation. It covers identifying the main components used in liquid cooling and air- cooling systems and the purpose and function of these components. You will carry out practical activities of removing and refitting liquid cooling system components and testing it for leaks.Vehicle Exhaust SystemsThis unit introduces you to the fundamental principles of light vehicle exhaust systems. You will learn how to work safely when removing and refitting exhaust system and identify the main components.Vehicle Braking SystemsThis unit introduces you to the principles of vehicle braking system components and operation. It covers identifying the main components used in the mechanical and hydraulic braking systems and the purpose and function of these components. You will learn how to carryout practical routine maintenance on light vehicle braking systems.Vehicle Driveline Systems This unit introduces you to vehicle transmission systems and covers the basic identification of the major items of the unit and their function. You will learn how to use workshop manuals to locate specific data.Vehicle Steering and Suspension SystemsThis unit introduces you to the principles of vehicle steering and suspension system components and operation. It covers identifying the main components used in steering and suspension systems and the purpose and function of these components. You will learn how to remove and replace steering and suspension components.English and MathematicsGood English and mathematics skills are key to securing the best jobs in this industry.
