BTEC Applied Science Course Content Throughout the course you will complete a range of mandatory units which cover concepts such as energy, chemical reactions and the structure and role of cells. In addition you will also look at aspects of working in the science industry and will have the opportunity to visit laboratories in local industries and universities. The course also consists of key practical techniques which you will carry out in our well-equipped laboratories. There are specialist units in biology, chemistry and physics covering topics such as microbiology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and electrical circuits. These and other topics also allow the development of the mathematical skills needed to be a proficient scientific researcher. The course is equal to one AS level if studied over one year and is equal to one full A level if studied for two years. In the first year of the course you will study units including: Fundamentals of Science Working in the Science Industry Scientific Practical Techniques Other units on the two year course may include: Physiology of Human Body Systems Chemistry Laboratory Techniques Electrical Circuits and their Applications Progression After successful completion of this two year Applied Science course it will help you to progress into employment, apprenticeships or to university to study from a range courses such as Biomedical Sciences, Applied Science, Animal Science, Forensic Science or Nursing. Assessment All units are coursework based assessments. The grading system converts the total mark to grades from Pass to Merit to Distinction, depending upon the overall score that you achieve. This is a very practical approach to the subject in which you will become skilful in carrying out practical techniques and following procedures used in vocational contexts.
