Planned and Reactive Maintenance engineers monitor, repair and maintain all the building services equipment, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems in occupied buildings such as offices, schools, hospitals, factories or shops. Apprentices will learn about various systems and components. They also learn how to diagnose and rectify faults. Types of systems candidates will learn about: Cold water and Hot water: Open vented, storage, unvented , secondary circulation - instantaneous (plate heat exchanger) Heating: Low temperature hot water - medium temperature hot water Air: conditioning systems Heat rejection systems - tempered air ventilation systems Learn about the following components and how to fault find and repair: Fans - humidifiers - heater batteries - cooling batteries - grilles - dampers - attenuators - automatic controls - time control for air conditioning systems - energy management systems - motorised dampers - condensers - cooling towers - refrigeration units – chillers-storage cisterns - hot water storage vessels - electric and gas water heaters - appliance control valve or tap, terminal fittings - stop valves - float operated valves - single and double check valves - pressure reducing valves - gate valves - RPZ valves - servicing valves - drain taps - shower mixer valves - blending valves - circulating pumps (bronze) - booster pumps - line strainer - temperature and pressure relief valve - expansion vessels - storage cisterns. Electrical systems; Circuits, fault finding, wiring up systems and components and safe isolation.

Organise resources within BSE, Electrical (2 exams) Fuel Systems (2 exams), hot & cold water systems, heating, ventilation and Air conditioning. There is also a Centre Practical pack- Learners wire up and test a S-Plan system. An onsite practical folder in which learners gather evidence of work done.
