Sociology is the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. It could be described as the science of society and will allow you to develop personal transferable skills such as critical and reflective thinking, research and presentation. AS Level Sociology compliments many other subjects such as the Humanities, Psychology and Health and Social Care. In Year One you will study: 1) Socialisation, culture and identity and 2) Research methods and researching social inequalities. In Year Two you will look at Debates in Contemporary Society with a specific focus on Globalisation and the Digital World and a choice of one topic from Crime and Deviance, Education and Religion, Faith and Belief. What will the lessons be like? Classes are varied with group work, independent work, and teacher led sessions. There is some role play and plenty of opportunity for individual research and presentation. The subject also lends itself nicely to class debate. Year 12 (AS Level / A Level Year One) Component 1: introducing socialisation, culture and identity Component 2: Research methods and researching social inequalities. Year 13 (A Level Year Two) Component 3: Debates in Contemporary Society How is it assessed? Assessment will be based on two written examinations for AS and three written examinations for the full A-Level (comprising of Year One and Year Two topics). There will be no assessed course work. How can I go onto study further and what sort of jobs can it lead to? This subject can be studied further and many universities offer degree courses in Sociology. Sociology is also a useful qualification for other degree courses including teaching, business, management and social work. Sociology is useful for jobs working with the public. Some examples of careers where sociology would be directly useful are advice worker, community development worker, social researcher, social worker and youth worker.
