Physics can help explain the world around us and is a Russell group preferred subject. The course follows the new AQA Specification A. This choice of specification provides a content that is exciting and stimulating for all students with an optional unit in Year 13. What will the lessons be like? Practical work takes place throughout the course, including 12 compulsory practical activities that develop experimental skills. Core content 1. Measurements and their errors 2. Particles and radiation 3. Waves 4. Mechanics and materials 5. Electricity 6. Further mechanics and thermal physics (Yr 13) 7. Fields and their consequences (Yr 13) 8. Nuclear physics (Yr 13) How is it assessed? Assessment is by means of three units at AS level and three at A2 level, giving six in total for the whole A level, the overall grade being a combination of both years work. For each year of the course, two units will be assessed externally through written examination and one unit is an externally marked practical assignment. AS: Paper 1:Written exam -1hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of AS Paper 2:Written exam -1hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of AS A2: Paper 1: Written exam - 2 hours, 105 marks, 35% of A2 Paper 2: Written exam - 2 hours, 105 marks, 35% of A2 Paper 3: Written exam - 2 hours, 90 marks, 30% of A2 How can I go on to study further and what sort of jobs can it lead to? Physics opens up lots of opportunities. Students can study at university in diverse fields such as Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, and Electrical & Aeronautical Engineering and Physics, as well as many unrelated careers. Physicists are very successful in careers you would not necessarily associate with Physics - such as finance and medicine!
