GCE AS in Law

UPDATED 20161206 15:58:55

Studying Law develops students' problem solving skills through the application of legal rules, together with an understanding of legal method and reasoning. These skills provide excellent preparation for students who wish to progress to study law at degree level or pursue a wide range of careers. Students are encouraged to be aware of the continually changing and developing nature of the subject and are expected to keep up to date and be aware of recent legal developments by using twitter, law reports in The Times newspaper and the A Level Law Review magazine. You will begin with a fascinating study of the legislative process in England. A highly instructive visit to both the Houses of Parliament to witness law making in practice complements this element of the course. You will learn about the underlying principles of criminal liability and a range of offences including murder, voluntary manslaughter and the non-fatal offences. There is also study of civil law torts like negligence, occupiers' liability and nuisance, to name but a few. You are taught how to recognise and apply these to factual scenarios. You will learn how to use authority - to cite relevant statutes and case law - in order to apply the law to the facts in the scenario and come to a reasoned conclusion as to which criminal offence or torts have been committed.
