Course overview A BTEC in Applied Science gives students a strong core base of knowledge in the 3 sciences together with practical experience from real world assignments; it will also develop their teamwork, thinking skills and project management. The course covers basic principles in all 3 sciences with taught elements from each of the 3 departments; topics include waves and communication (Physics); cell, tissues and organs (Biology); and periodicity and bonding (Chemistry). This content will be examined via a written exam. Much of the rest of the course covers practical techniques and their application, these are assessed via tasks set and marked by the exam board or assignments set and marked internally. BTEC Nationals use a combination of assessment styles to give students the confidence they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace, and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout their career. There is a BTEC Certificate in Applied Science which is equivalent to an AS, which you will complete in Year 12 and an Extended Certificate, equivalent to a full A level, which you will complete in Year 13. You can expect to: • Undertake practical work, including planning, obtaining results, analysing and evaluating • Study the core knowledge needed in Chemistry, Biology and Physics • Work on real world assignments • Produce presentations about applications of science in the workplace • Visit a range of workplaces to see the application of theoretical concepts Where does it lead? If you are interested in studying a Science related degree course a BTEC in Applied Science together with a combination of A levels will allow access to courses ranging from Chemistry, Zoology, Physiotherapy and Biochemistry.
