Are you the person people come to for a chat? Do people describe you as a good listener? Are you looking to develop your skills in supporting others? Have you been interested in becoming a peer mentor but not quite sure what is involved? This course provides an introduction to the concepts of peer mentoring within a safe, welcoming environment. You will learn the purpose of mentoring, the role and responsibilities of the mentor and some of the values that underpin peer mentoring work. You will discuss the crucial role boundaries play in mentoring work and what may occur if these boundaries are not held. The course also looks at the importance of working within a positive, inclusive framework driven by policy and ethics for the safety of all. The follow-up 2 day workshop 'An Introduction to Peer Mentoring Part 2: Skills and Practice' will explore different communication techniques and provide an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in Part 1 by practicing skills safely.
