As the 20th century dawned Reading had much to be thankful for, it was a much healthier place to live and it had developed into a modern commercial hub. We will identify how during the next four decades the town built on its Victorian foundations extended its boundaries and offered opportunity to many. Our analysis will uncover the poverty that was present in the prospering town and the upheaval caused by the advent of World War One.
