The course covers the 3 areas of music: listening, performing and composing and you will develop your skills in all 3 as you progress through your A level studies!Year 12 Unit 1: Influences on Music - 1 hour, 45 minute exam/ Year 13 Unit 4: Music in Context - 2 hour, 15 minute exam. You will spend time listening to a variety of styles of music from Baroque to rock and will practise identifying different features within the pieces. You will also prepare for the exam with knowledge on some specific pieces of music. Year 12 Unit 2: Composing: Creating Musical Ideas - coursework / Year 13 Unit 5: Composing: Developing Musical Ideas - coursework. You will be given a choice of briefs to compose a piece from for a combination of instruments of your choosing (one piece in year 12, and another in year 13). Year 12 Unit 3: Performing: Interpreting musical ideas - coursework/ Year 13 Unit 6: Performing: A Musical Performance. You will choose from several performance tasks, which include performing as a soloist, as part of an ensemble and through music technology. (Again, one performance portfolio in year 12, another in year 13.) In year 13, you will prepare your performance for a recital to an audience.
