Land Based Studies : Entry Level

UPDATED 20161125 17:03:59

Why study Land Based Studies? The Land Based Studies course is ideal for students interested in gaining the skills needed to work in the land-based sector. A wide range of units are available covering horticulture, agriculture and animal care. Students will study a range of units which will typically cover care of farm animals, plant propagation and plant maintenance. What does the course cover and what is expected of you? The courses commence with a gentle introduction to the animals ensuring that students feel confident handling them before starting the coursework. The range of animals that students will be looking after may include sheep, chickens and pigs. Depending on which units are chosen for each course, students may be required to clean out the chicken house, observe animals, or be in charge of feeding and watering the animals. Students spend time on a farm doing practical work and during the spring participate in lambing; there is also the opportunity for placements at a range of other animal related establishments. At Mary Hare we have a chicken club which was started in 2014. The chickens are from the fertile eggs that students hatched out in an incubator. The students are in charge of looking after the chickens during term time, letting them out in the morning and feeding them and shutting them away at night. The horticultural element of the course entails learning a range of techniques including preparing soil for planting, plant identification, plant propagation and maintenance of garden tools. Where can it take you? These courses can lead to a wide range of careers within the horticulture and animal care sector for example caring for plants in a nursery or garden centre, working as a groundsman (or woman!) or care of animals on farms.
