What is it? BTEC IT includes practical tasks and theory. Incorporating a wide range of topics including website development, animation, database design and game development. The course opens the door to careers in IT and business. What will I study? Over the two years you will study the relationship between hardware and software and managing and communicating information and data. Units include: information technology systems (written examination); creating systems to manage information (controlled assessment); using social media in business (internally assessed); data modelling (internally assessed); website development (internally assessed). A further three units to be confirmed. Assessment. Equivalent in size to two A Levels. 8 units to complete over the course of two years. Types of assessment Internal assessments and external assessments including tasks and exams. In the first year of study there are two externally assessed units, one of which will be a written exam and one of which will be a controlled assessment, with a further unit to be confirmed to be externally assessed in the second year. Where does it lead? The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with academics to ensure that it incorporates the most up-to-date knowledge and skills to enable progression to higher education. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been consulted on the content development to confirm its relevance to current industry practice used in IT and related occupational disciplines. Former student Lewis Bell achieved a Distinction* and in conjunction with his other academic achievements, achieved a place in the Royal Navy and is now on-board ship travelling the world.
