Science (Applied) BTEC Extended Certificate

UPDATED 20161122 12:30:44

This course consists of 4 units of study taken over 1 or 2 years, These are Principles and Applications of Science, Practical Scientific procedures and Techniques and Scientific Investigation skills. These give a basic understanding of scientific principles and how to work safely in laboratories and competently use laboratory equipment. In addition students will study one unit from Biology or Chemistry. Learners will develop practical skills e.g. setting up laboratory apparatus, carrying out risk analysis, recording and analysing data. Exploring essential laboratory procedures, enabling learners to consider what it is like to work in the science industry. Learners will gain experience of a range of scientific instruments and their use allowing learners to develop their practical investigation skills. Learners will consider how the science industry impacts on the world we live in and essential mathematical tools e.g. significant figures, simple algebra and calculating experimental errors. Learners will gain an insight into how the human body works e.g. the structure and function of cells and the organisation of normal and diseased tissue. In addition they will study imaging and therapy techniques e.g. Nuclear medicine, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) etc. Other techniques used investigate the structures and functions of biological molecules e.g. setting up practical experiments, gel electrophoresis, and chromatography. Learners are introduced to the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, classification and identification of micro-organisms and factors affecting microbial growth. Learners will learn about extracting DNA, DNA fingerprinting, transforming cells and amplifying DNA using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
