Philosophy is concerned with the big questions: What is knowledge? What is truth? What is beauty? Philosophy is a rigorous intellectual discipline focused on reasons, arguments and justification. This course introduces you to Epistemology (theory of knowledge), Philosophy of Religion as well as in-depth studies in Moral Philosophy, including Normative Ethical theories, Utilitarianism, Deontological Ethics, Virtue Ethics and Metaethics. You will also study the Philosophy of Mind, which concerns questions about the relationship between mind and body, the mental and the physical. The course is designed to develop critical and intellectual skills, to challenge preconceptions, and to develop knowledge and understanding of major philosophical issues. Modules offered are: Epistemology What are the immediate objects of perception? Direct Realism, Indirect Realism, Idealism The definition of Knowledge: What is propositional knowledge? The tripartite theory of knowledge. The origin of concepts: Where do ideas/concepts and knowledge come from? Concept empiricism, knowledge empiricism, Rationalism Philosophy of Religion The concept of God Arguments relating to the existence of God: Ontological, design and cosmological arguments The problem of evil Religious Language: Verificationism, falsificationism Ethics Ethical theories: How do we decide what is morally right? Utilitarianism, Deontological ethics, Virtue ethics. Metaethics, The status of moral language Cognitivism (moral realism, error theory), Non-cognitivism (emotivism, prescriptivism) Philosophy of Mind The mind-body problem: What is the relationship between the mental and the physical? Dualism, Behaviourism, mind-brain identity theories, Functionalism, Eliminative materialism
