WHAT DOES THIS SUBJECT INVOLVE? In the BTEC Extended Diploma you will complete thirteen units of study over two years. You will be involved in primary and secondary research on a wide range of topics relevant to the Health and Social care sector. You will also undertake a work placement in one or more local care settings. If you want to combine your care work with several other subjects please consider the Health & Social Care A level equivalent (BTEC Level 3 Extended certificate) WHAT PARTICULAR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS WILL I DEVELOP? You will study a range of topics within Health and Social care contexts and fully explore the effects this can have on the NHS and society. You will focus on theories, key terms, and concepts and develop your critical analysis skills and contextual understanding of this within the sector, as you undertake research and extended writing tasks. WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will be involved in primary and secondary research on a wide range of topics relevant to the care careers sector. You will also undertake a work placement in one or more local care settings. In your first year you will study a Foundation Diploma with is the equivalent of 1.5 A Levels. In your second year you will follow an Extended Diploma programme which is equivalent to three full A Levels. The mandatory units covered are: • Human Lifespan Development • Working in Health and Social • Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care • Enquiries into Current Research in Health and Social Care • Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs • Work Experience in Health and Social Care • Principles of Safe Practice in Health and Social Care • Promoting Public Health You will also complete a further five optional units relating to other topics, for example: • Sociological perspectives • Psychological perspectives • Understanding Mental Wellbeing
Name: Health and Social Care - BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma Qualification title: Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (QCF) Qualification type: Assessment External assessments (examinations) The unit will be assessed through three written examinations of 90 marks lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes. Learners will be assessed through a number of short- and long-answer questions. Learners draw on essential information to create written answers to practical questions in exam conditions. Synoptic task (set and marked by exam board) Tasks require learners to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in a real-life scenario they are likely to encounter in the workplace. They provide students work based challenges, where they are faced with realistic work conditions and time-based pressures. Assignment assessments Teaching will be provided and then controlled assessments will take place during the year. Many units are assessed through projects devised by teachers, including portfolios, role plays, observations and presentations.
