Studying this qualification will provide students with a broad understanding of vocationally-related science. It will enable students to develop their knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, as well as those scientific practical skills recognised by higher education institutions and employers to be most important. The qualification also offers students an opportunity to develop transferable skills such as problem solving, research and communication as part of their applied learning.

Name: Btec Applied Science Qualification title: BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Applied Science (QCF) Qualification type: Assessment Unit 1: Key concepts in Science Students study key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and apply these to vocational contexts. Assessment for this unit is a 1.5 hour exam comprising short-answer questions. Unit 2: Applied Experimental Techniques Students complete six practical assignments – two for Biology, two for Chemistry and two for Physics. Students produce scientific reports for each assignment which forms the assessment for this unit. Unit 3: Science in the Modern World Students will use topical scientific issues to learn how to analyse, interpret and evaluate scientific data and to explore the ethical and social issues of scientific advances. Assessment for this unit is a 1.5 hour exam. Unit 4: The Human Body Students will study key concepts relating to the human body and apply these to vocational contexts. Assessment for this unit is a 1.5 hour exam comprising short-answer questions. Unit 5: Investigating Science Students will undertake the role of a research scientist and complete a scientific investigation. Students produce a scientific report which forms the assessment for this unit. Unit 6: Optional unit: Microbiology, Medical Physics for Organic Chemistry.
