Level 2 - Animal Care Diploma

The Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care is a full-time vocational course studied over one year that provides a foundation in a broad range of skills required for employment in the animal care industry and offers an opportunity to work with a range of animals including dogs, rodents, reptiles and farm livestock. Students will develop vocational skills in animal handling, health care, feeding and animal biology. The course offers a blend of theory, task-based learning, tutorials and practical workshops at college combined with field visits and work experience in the animal care industry. Typical placements may include kennels, catteries, pet shops, farms, farm parks, zoos, animal sanctuaries, animal rescue centres and veterinary practices. Students must complete 150 hours of work experience alongside attendance at college to achieve this qualification. COURSE CONTENT Animal Biology Practical Animal Feeding Animal Behaviour & Handling Animal Health & Welfare Maintain Animal Accommodation Work Related Experience Students can choose one of the following options dependent on campus offer: Care of Exotics Breeds & Grooming Care of Farm Livestock Animal Nursing Estate Skills Horse Care Animal Establishments PROGRESSION Students can progress onto the Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Animal Management for a further one year or the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management for a further two years. Students must aim to achieve a high merit (above 2.0) to progress onto any Level 3 qualification. Alternatively, students may seek employment in animal welfare and rescue centres, animal sanctuaries, pet retail outlets, kennels and catteries and dog grooming parlours.
