Chemistry

UPDATED 20161116 11:05:51

The course takes students on a journey through 10 Storylines (5 at AS and 5 at A level) designed to introduce chemical concepts in a spiral approach. AS topics Elements of Life The elements and compounds in the universe, the human body and in salt deposits. Chemical ideas include atomic structure, Group 2 chemistry, bonding and the shapes of molecules. Developing Fuels Fuels, what they consist of, how energy involved in their combustion is measured and the developments of better fuels. Chemical ideas include thermochemistry, catalysis, alkanes and alkenes, addition polymerisation and isomerism. Elements from the Sea The extraction of halogens from minerals in the sea, together with a study of the properties and uses of these elements and their compounds. Chemical ideas include halogen chemistry, redox chemistry and equilibrium. The Ozone Story Important processes occurring in the ozone layer of the atmosphere. We look at rates of reaction, radical reactions, intermolecular bonding, haloalkanes and the ozone layer. What's in a Medicine. Study the development of aspirin from its botanical origins, leading to the study of organic functional groups and methods of chemical analysis. Many higher education courses require A level knowledge of Chemistry. For example, veterinary science, medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering, dentistry, geological sciences, material sciences, biological sciences, and of course chemical sciences. The course places as much emphasis on applied chemistry as theoretical chemistry and involves a lot of practical work.
