This course is the study of the individual and society. It tries to explain human behaviour by studying how the social groups to which people belong influence their actions and beliefs. The experience of ethnic minority groups, the nature and nurture debate and gender are some of the areas researched by sociologists. AS topics that may be covered are culture and identity, families and households, education, health as well as theory and methods. A2 topics include social stratification, crime and deviance, beliefs in society and the mass media. During the two years there is an emphasis on essay writing and students are expected to be pro-active in undertaking further reading. Sociology is a valuable subject to be studied for all types of work because it involves an understanding of people and social relationships.
