This course focuses on the three big European powers of the 20th century: Germany, Russia and Great Britain, and their contrasting fortunes as the century progressed. The AS course consists of two units, in the first you will cover Russian history from 1881 to 1953, considering the causes of the Revolutions of 1917 and the Bolshevik state under Lenin and Stalin. In the second year you will cover British political history from 1945-90, considering the roles of major figures such as Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson and Margaret Thatcher. In the second year you will analyse the significance of the Nazi regime in German history between 1890 and 1991 as coursework. You will also examine the Cold War between 1945 and 1990.
