AS & A2 Mathematics / Further Mathematics What Entry Requirements Do I Need? For AS and A2 Mathematics - GCSE Mathematics, minimum Grade B. For AS and A2 Further Mathematics - GCSE Mathematics, minimum Grade A. The AS course in mathematics is a one year course which comprises of 3 modules, all of which have an exam at the end of the year in June. The modules studied are Core 1, Core 2 and one applied module from Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 1. The A2 course is a second year, following on from AS Maths, where the next 3 modules are Core 3, Core 4 and another applied module from Mechanics 1, Decision 1 or Statistics 1. Again these modules have an end of year exam for each module. The AS and A2 Further Mathematics is a more advanced course which is strongly recommended for students who wish to progress to a mathematics or STEM-based degree or those who have a flair for the subject. Further Mathematics is a complete standalone course which requires 3 modules for AS and 6 modules for A2, these are in addition to the A Level mathematics course. It is also possible to study AS further Mathematics over a two year period, students interested in further maths often choose this option, allowing more flexibility and study time. What Will I Learn On These A Level Courses? Topics studied throughout Core 1 to Core 4 will cover algebra, geometry and calculus. The applied modules are Mechanics 1 (M1), Decision 1 (D1) and Statistics 1 (S1). In M1, you will consider mathematical models, based on Newtonian mechanics, to explain how and why things move or stay still. In D1, numerical methods, brought to the forefront of mathematics through increased use of the computer, are taught. In S1, further study will occur in the areas of probability, descriptive statistics and statistical distributions. Further Mathematics modules include Further Pure 1 and 2 and applied modules Mechanics 2, Decision 2 and Statistics 2.
