Religious Studies is an academic and highly relevant subject in today's world. It studies the origins of morality and how we decide what is right and wrong. It considers the ultimate questions of human existence and considers a range of responses ranging from pre-Christian Greek Philosophy through to a variety of religious and secular responses from contemporary philosophers. This will be complemented by studying the key beliefs and practices within Buddhism, enabling a contrast between some Eastern and Western Philosophical traditions. You will study a range of ethical theories and consider how we decide what is right and wrong. We will be applying these theories to contemporary issues such as genetic engineering and war. In philosophy you will study the reasons why people believe in God and evaluate these by considering the challenges offered by science and by the problem of evil. In our study of Buddhism we will be considering the perspectives of this non-theistic religion by learning about Buddhist beliefs and values and how these are reflected in practice. Student quote: "Ethics and religion are something that affect us all. They can cause wars, change societies and influence our morals. The study of them gives us a wider view of others' lives and helps us to be wiser."
