A chemistry qualification opens up a world of possibilities and expands your choices. New breakthroughs in fields such as genetics, biochemistry, medicine, forensics, nanotechnology, drug discovery and the environment are all driven by chemistry. Chemistry is about the molecules all around us. It is about matter: specifically how matter changes. Studying A level Chemistry will allow you to learn the theory about why the things around us behave the way they do and allow you to confirm that theory during the practical elements of the course. Chemistry is seen as a challenging, academic and rigorous A level that will impress a lot of universities/employers. The chemistry course covers the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. The course is divided up into physical, organic and inorganic chemistry with topics in each of these units. Students study chemistry in a spiral way so that chemical ideas, introduced in an early topic, are reinforced again in Year 13 when topics are again divided into physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. Topics range from the study of the atomic structure to equilibrium and rates of reaction, constantly building on and adding to theory and concepts first studied at GCSE. Student quote: "The Chemistry course is diverse and exciting; it certainly challenges you."
