This demanding subject will cover topics such as: Unit 1: Language Variation - The way in which language has changed from Early Modern English to the present day, including varieties of English around the world. Unit 2: Language Acquisition The way in which children learn to speak,read and write between the ages of 0-8 years. Unit 3: Investigating Language A synoptic unit that will require students to apply research skills and knowledge of language frameworks to a variety of texts. Students will learn how to comment on lexis, semantics, grammar, discourse,syntax, morphology, pragmatics, graphology in spoken and written texts. Unit 4: Crafting Language A coursework unit (only in the 2nd year) where students demonstrate their skills as writers within their selected genre, crafting texts for different audiences and purposes. Assessment Objectives : To be successful students will be able to: Apply appropriate methods of language analysis, using linguistic terminology. Demonstrate critical understanding of concepts and issues relevant ot language. Analyse and evaluate how contextual factors and language features are associated with the construction of m meaning. Explore connections across texts. Demonstrate expertise and creativity in the use of English.
