Do you enjoy debating how effective local, national and international political initiatives work? Do you have an interest in how policies are made and assessing if they have worked? Do you wonder why people are not interested in politics, when it has such a huge influence on them and the society they live in? Whether you want to become a politician or just an informed voter, this course will help you understand the world in which you live. This course examines how we elect MPs and form governments, how Parliament works, the role of the courts, political parties and the power of the Prime Minister. We also study concepts such as freedom, justice, sovereignty and equality. In politics, we also debate many fundamental questions: should there be changes to the electoral system? Should Parliament be reformed? Which beliefs do the main political parties in contemporary society hold? Should our society be more equal? It is a lively subject and you will need to keep up to date with the news and the political issues that affect us individually and as a nation. Politics is highly regarded by both employers and higher education. As well as politics itself, it can lead to a variety of careers including Law, Journalism, Business, the Police, the Media, Teaching, and the Social Sciences.
