A Level Philosophy and Ethics

UPDATED 20161104 10:42:22

Philosophy and Ethics is a dynamic and thoroughly interesting look at the questions that have tested humans for thousands of years. Students will study Philosophical topics such as is there a God? What happens to us when we die? Why do we have to suffer? Why are miracles important? Religious experience and atheistic critiques of religion. We will study the famous philosophers from the past and present, from Plato to Richard Dawkins and debate our own opinions as we seek to become philosophers ourselves. Students will also take part in a study of an ethical issue such as medical ethics or equality and look at the implications of such ideas to society and religion. This looks at case studies of issues in the world today such as abortion rules, the euthanasia debate in the UK, the treatment of women in different communities and the world wide legalisation of same sex marriage. Finally students will study the fascinating world of Buddhism. Buddhism is seen as a philosophy, a way of life and by some as a religion as it makes up one of the six main religions of the world. Students will learn about its origins and teachings. This will include a visit to a local Buddhist centre to practice meditation techniques.
