This course would be suitable for someone looking to enter the legal profession or the police, as well as an interest in current affairs. This course provides you with a general overview of the English Legal System. It includes the structure and the procedure of the courts and its personnel, for instances, juries, barristers and solicitors. We will also consider contemporary issues, exploring a wide range of interesting cases and Acts of Parliament. The aim is to improve your knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of a whole range of issues affecting the legal system. This gives way to a more in depth analysis of Criminal Law in the second year. Here, the emphasis is on developing your analytical and reasoning skills and we do this by reviewing in excess of 200 cases. In addition to lectures, we will visit the Magistrates and Crown Court in Bristol and then visit the Supreme Court and the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Law complements many disciplines and is suited to run alongside Economics, English, Sociology and Psychology, to name but a few. It serves as a perfect precursor to studying at university as it develops reasoning skills and relies heavily upon argument to inform discussions and essays. Many of our students leave to study Law at university.
