AS in Religious Studies

UPDATED 20170116 14:52:04

Are you/do you… • Enjoy debate and discussion and finding out about the big questions that have puzzled philosophers for centuries? • Wish to study a highly recognised academic subject that university admissions tutors respect and admire? • Enjoy putting together an argument to convince others of your point of view? • Like to enjoy the challenge of learning new philosophical and ethical ideas and concepts? The Religious Studies A Level is a linear course that is assessed by two written examinations at the end of the two year course. Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding and the skill of evaluation. There is the opportunity to gain the AS qualification as a stand-alone subject that is assessed through two written examinations at the end of the first year. The specification is divided into three areas of study: Philosophy of Religion which analyses arguments for and against the existence of God; Ethics which takes an in-depth look at ethical issues of life and death and how ethical choices are made; and the study of Christianity as a religion and the challenges presented from science to this belief structure. A qualification in Religious Studies can lead to a wide and diverse range of Higher Education courses and careers. Many employers and university admissions tutors appreciate the skills of evaluation and empathy that a student in Religious Studies can bring to their work place and degree course. The course is useful for careers in social care, teaching, law, journalism, economics, human resource management, careers service and law enforcement. We have also had students who have gone on to study more STEM based qualifications such as engineering, maths and nursing.
