English Literature

English Literature with OCR is a fine blend of coursework and examination work, which covers an extensive range of texts, genres and periods. Lessons involve relaxed yet challenging seminar-style teaching based around the close study of texts. Our groups are mixed, lively and, above all, friendly. Our teachers work in teams and teach to their strengths and interests. With us you will do exams in Year 12 to obtain an AS level. In year 13 you will cover many of the same texts in preparation for your A level exams. Essentially you study much of the same material for both levels and emerge with two qualifications. Your AS level will show you and universities how you are doing. The A Level papers are however self-contained and are separate in terms of marks so if you do poorly at AS it does not impact directly on your A Level mark. At AS-Level we prepare you for two examinations which cover the same texts that you are likely to study at A2. The first component involves Shakespeare and poetry pre -1900. The second involves literature post-1900. In Year 13 you have two exams. One involves a close reading and an essay on a Shakespeare play. The second section of the exam involves a comparison of some poetry and a play. Exam 2 features Comparative and Contextual study where you will undertake a close reading of an unseen piece and a comparative essay on two texts which you have studied. Coursework involves the study of three texts across the genres of poetry, drama and prose. Task 1 is either a close analysis or a recreative piece with a commentary. Task 2 sees you linking two texts focusing on connections and comparisons between them. English at DGSB will open your eyes and mind to some of the best words ever written. Try it!
