A Level History

UPDATED 20161101 16:15:35

History is a very well respected academic subject and studying it at A Level will provide you with a wealth of skills which are valued both by employers and higher education institutions. It will leave you questioning and analyzing the world around you, as well as allowing you to come to substantiated judgments that are evidence based yet unique in their own right. Knowledge and skills you will acquire: • acquiring a broad range of historical knowledge and understanding, including a sense of development over time, and an appreciation of culture and attitudes of societies other than our own; • evaluating critically the significance and utility of a large body of material, including evidence from contemporary sources and the opinions of more recent historians; • engaging directly with questions and presenting independent opinions about them in arguments that are well-written, clearly expressed, coherently organised and effectively supported by evidence; Y12 content - pupils start the course by studying the growth and development of nationalism in Europe in the 20th century. There are two exam papers at the end of the course covering the topics of Germany and West Germany, 1918-89 and The Rise and Fall of Fascism in Italy c1911-46. Y13 content - pupils study The British Experience of Warfare from 1790 – 1918. This is a thematic study in which pupils are required to identify key areas of change and continuity over the period. Building on this the coursework aspect is based on the Napoleonic Wars and the battle of Waterloo.
