Introduction: ‘You develop the insight of an artist, the analytical precision of a scientist and the persuasiveness of a lawyer.’ Quote from 'Why Study English?' by Prof. Moran, Brunel University English Literature is a varied and popular subject, combining a strong academic tradition with the most recent thinking in the field of literary studies. The course enables pupils to enjoy reading and discussing English Literature, and to increase their understanding of what the study of literature involves. The emphasis is on getting to know a wide range of texts in depth, both through close reading and through an appreciation of the contexts in which literary texts are written and understood. Course details: Students complete two modules, the compulsory Love throughthe Ages and then a choice between ‘WW1 and its aftermath’or ‘Modern Literature, 1945 to Present Day.’ During their studies they will cover prose, poetry and drama in both their modules, studying works by Shakespeare, Plath, Owen, Duffy, Atwood, Austen, Bronte, Hardy, Fitzgerald, Hemingway and Faulks, amongst others. Students will also complete their own critical comparative essay on two texts, at least one of which must have been written pre -1900. This will be an independently led project, with students choosing their texts, their themes and their titles. This task will test students’ understanding of Literature, and demand organization, discipline and the application of their skills and knowledge to achieve a high mark. This provides invaluable experience of a ‘university’ style of work, coupled with the outstanding support and guidance available from the department.
