Economics - A level

UPDATED 20161028 10:21:25

This subject involves a very broad-based exploration of the activities, decision making and behaviour that influence the successes and failures of an economy. You will look in detail at the British economy but will also study the performance of other major economic powers, such as China, the USA and the Eurozone countries. There is also a section of work on economic development in less wealthy countries. Students who succeed in Economics are usually those interested in current affairs but who are also willing to participate in detailed analysis: of data, behaviour and decision making. There is a great deal of room in this subject for discussion, debate and opinion - be prepared for the fact that there are no right answers in Economics! You will learn a great deal about the UK economy and world affairs and the big issues of our times – for example, what effect could Brexit have on the UK economy? Economics allows you to improve the full range of academic skills: information sourcing and research, fluent writing, techniques of analysis and evaluation, confidence with data and graphs, ability to use numbers to explain your ideas. You will also learn more about the behaviour and decision making of governments, businesses and individuals. Economics and Maths? It is not necessary to be strong in specialist mathematics to succeed in Economics, however the new A level syllabus does require you to be confident with numbers and essential techniques such as percentages, statistical analysis and interpretation of diagrams.
