Students will sit un-tiered exams accessible to learners of different abilities. There are no separate papers for foundation/higher. Component 1 - 40% of qualification - written examination - 1 hour 45 minutes. Section A - Prose reading. Students will be required to read and analyse one prose text. They will be assessed through a range of structured questions. Section B - Prose writing. Students will complete one creative writing task selected from a choice of four titles. Component 2 - 60% of qualification - written examination - 2 hours. Section A - Non Fiction reading. Students will be required to read two extracts of high-quality non-fiction from the 19th and 21st centuries. They will be accessed through a range of structured questions. Section B - writing. Students will be required to write two transactional/persuasive pieces. Component 3 - Spoken language. Students will present a speech. This will include responses to questions and feedback. Achievement in spoken language wil be reported as part of the qualification, but it will not form part of the final mark and grade.
