This exciting subject explores criminal behaviour as well as social policy and methods of punishment. Criminology allows students to investigate psychological, sociological and biological explanations as to why people turn to crime. Analysis of the usefulness of crime punishments will also be a prominent part of the course. The subject allows in depth discussions about contemporary and older methods of punishment. Students investigate how the media can play a part in societal stereotypes of criminals as well as the ongoing problems of fear of crime. Exploration of the different types of crime is also a large part of the course. Investigations into new forms of crime such as cybercrime seem popular amongst students. Students who succeed in Criminology are usually those interested in criminal behaviour but who are also willing to participate in detailed analysis; of social science theory, the criminal justice system and social policy. There is a great deal of room in this subject for discussion, debate and opinion - be prepared for the fact that there are no right answers in Criminology due to its social science make-up! You will learn a lot about the changing criminal justice system within the UK and widen your ideas surrounding social policy and the impacts of the media on criminal stereotypes. Criminology allows you to investigate a wide range of interesting theory which will improve your ability to analyse key facts.
