This is a new City & Guilds course that has replaced the First Diploma Animal Care as a level 2 introductory course in order to fit the new National Qualifications and Credit Framework The Level 2 Diploma will provide a detailed introduction to animal care and husbandry combining practical based training with sound theoretical knowledge. The modules, which are listed below, will be delivered using a wide variety of methods including lectures, practical work, demonstrations and self study. The course provides the flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development within the animal care industry. The course is extremely popular with school leavers who wish to combine a practical based training programme with sound theoretical knowledge. The modules studied include; Work Related Experience in Animal Care Animal Care Industry and Organisations Animal Accommodation, Handling and Care Introduction to Animal and Plant Biology Animal Health, Welfare and Behaviour Care of exotic animals This list is an example of what may be taught, but can vary at each Centre. Students must attend a relevant work placement in the animal industry, for example, in a veterinary practice, boarding kennel, pet retail organisation or canine grooming parlour. The work placement is carried out each Friday. The vast majority of students usually progress onto the Level 3 Diploma courses if they gain sufficient merits on the Level 2 Diploma. Possible Careers / Jobs include Employment in kennels, catteries, pet shops, grooming parlours, or welfare societies e.g. RSPCA.
