Subject includes poetry, novels and plays at least one of which will be Shakespeare. Some texts will be linked by theme or subject matter while some texts will be analysed from the perspective of literary criticism. To enjoy this course and get the most out of it you must enjoy reading literary texts and discussing them. The texts will be studied in detail and there will be discussions in class on interpretation and literary technique. This specification will be co-taught with Y12 English Literature Note - You cannot study both A Level English Combined and English Literature Y12 Paper 1 - Literary Genres: Drama (Aspects of Comedy) 50% (of Y12) Central focus on genres which continue to evolve from an ancient past and look forward. Students study one Shakespeare play and a second drama text. Paper 2 - Literary Genres: Prose and Poetry (Aspects of Comedy) 50% (of Y12) Central focus on genres which are influenced by culture and look backwards as well as forwards. Students study one poetry text and one novel. Y13 1: Literary Genres: Aspects of Comedy 40% (of Y13) Central focus on genres which continue to evolve from an ancient past and look forward. Students study three texts: one Shakespeare play, a second drama text and one further text. One of the two further texts must have been written pre-1900. 2: Texts and Genres: Elements of Crime writing 40% (of Y13) Central focus on genres which are influenced by culture and look backwards as well as forwards. Students study three texts: one post-2000 novel, one poetry text and one further text. At least one of the texts must have been written pre-1900. Students are also examined on an unseen text. 3: Theory and independence 20% (of Y13) Non-examination Assessment: Two pieces of coursework, one poetry, one prose and each needs to be linked to a different section of the AQA Critical Anthology (Narrative theory, Marxist, Feminist, Post-Colonial, and Eco-criticism, Literary Value and the Canon).
