The key stage 5 courses build on what students have already learned. AS and A Level encourage them to develop ideas with much greater freedom and experimentation. Exploration of materials through pushing boundaries and finding innovative ways of creating art works are key to the development of a personal language and understanding of the nature of Art or Photography. Students will develop their own ideas for each Unit, with teacher guidance. The courses are aimed at preparing students for subsequent study in Foundation and Degree courses, reflecting the values and concerns of art education at these higher levels and of the nature of contemporary art practice. Traditional skills including life drawing and painting are provided for Art & Design Unendorsed students, whilst the Photographers will learn about technical aspects of using DSLR cameras, lighting and exposure. Critical and contextual studies are integral to all work done and students will undertake personal research studies to support their own practice. Learning about Art, Craft, Design and Photography will focus on understanding the influences (both external and internal) that shape artists’ and designers’ ideas and development and how these have contributed to the development of their ideas and their particular styles of work.
