Sociology is the study of society. Human beings are constantly trying to make sense of the societies in which they live. The difference between common sense and sociological thought is that sociologists use social concepts, such as socialization, culture, identity, social differentiation, power and stratification and ideology, to establish detailed theories (or explanations) about society. In this way sociological explanations evolve. The central focus of study is on UK society today with consideration given to the global context where relevant. Candidates are assessed on their ability to: demonstrate, apply, analyse and evaluate knowledge and understanding of sociological theories, concepts, evidence and research methods in order to: present arguments, make judgments and draw conclusions.
