British Sign Language Level 1 Introduction (Unit 101) (Health Care)

This course offers you the opportunity to learn to use and understand British Sign Language at a basic level in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. You will not only learn everyday signs but also something about deaf culture and how to communicate with deaf people. The course builds the skills and confidence needed for language learning and includes deaf awareness information. The course is designed to provide a nationally accredited unit of BSL skills for people who work in healthcare services that may come into contact with Deaf people or colleagues. These may be as patients, service users, friends or relatives of patients. TBA Unit BSL101 Healthcare is suitable for those who wish to learn basic BSL skills to facilitate simple communication with Deaf people in healthcare setting, wish to learn new BSL skills as part of a programme of study, wish to progress to more advanced study and or employment using BSL in the future, are parents, family, friends or colleagues of Deaf people. You will learn to fingerspell the alphabet and will gain simple productive signing and receptive understanding skills such as how to: introduce yourself and greet people, ask basic questions such as Where is? and give simple replies use numbers, times and dates, describe the weather and give simple directions. You will also learn how to ask for clarification and give relevant personal information. You will develop communication strategies to help you get by and will learn to be confident when communicating with deaf people. There will be a variety of activities including: watching visual clips signing in pairs or small groups, memory and guessing games and pictures to help you acquire new vocabulary and role plays. All our tutors are deaf so you will benefit from their experience of living in the deaf community in Wolverhampton. Your tutor will monitor your progress as you complete activities on the course and will give you feedback on how to improve.
