Supported Studies Stepping Out

UPDATED 20161020 11:53:58

Briar Patch is a supported housing residential scheme run by NHC, in partnership with Genesis Housing Association (GHA). The Stepping Out programme is delivered at Briar Patch, in Letchworth. It is designed for young people with learning difficulties, aged 17 and over, who aspire to live independently. This programme runs for 40 weeks a year, commencing August Bank Holiday week including a reduced programme at half terms to provide students with essential money, food planning and shopping sessions. Further classes run during a seven-week Summer Programme, but there are no classes at either Christmas or Easter for a two-week period, although students can remain within the housing provision. The aims of Stepping Out are to develop and apply an extensive range of life and independent living skills in order to support you with the necessary skills to live in your own room or flat at Briar Patch. All subjects are designed to impact directly on your ability to live independently. Independent living skills - weekly money management, using the bank, food and nutrition, menu planning and shopping. Personal development - personal hygiene, relationships, self-awareness, decision-making, self-advocacy and problem solving. Community inclusion - healthy lifestyles, accessing local facilities and online safety. All Stepping Out students are supported in lessons to book and plan for leisure activities for their free time and a holiday with the local charity Leisure Direct. With support from GHA staff you will complete your own domestic tasks for your room/flat and communal areas and prepare your own meals.
