Supported Studies Retail

UPDATED 20161020 11:53:58

This programme is designed for young people aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties, working at entry level three. The aim of the programme is to increase independent living, functional skills, vocational skills in the area of retail, and employability skills in order to access supported or open employment in the future. This programme is timetabled across three days. You will start college at 9am and finish at 2.30pm, 4.15pm or 4.30pm. The curriculum is based upon project-based learning, which means you will get actively involved in each session and have the opportunity to work in teams and individually. You won't just be sitting in a classroom you will be out and about in the community, collaborating with other groups from Supported Studies and other curriculum areas from across the college. Although your course is based at the Stevenage campus, for some elements of your course you may access other sites. You will learn through a variety of physical activity, participation, work experience and academic study. The Retail programme includes a range of vocationally related accredited units, which are subject to change each year, to suit the needs and aspirations of the group. Trips and visits to large retail shops enrich the course and guest speakers from the world of retail will come in to speak to you. In previous years, the group visited a range of retail outlets including the Oxford Street branches of Selfridges and John Lewis. You will undertake a work experience placement for a minimum of 30 hours during the year. Relevant placements are sourced that meet students' interests and offer an appropriate level of support according to individual needs. You will be accompanied to interviews, receive job coaching and travel training, if needed. Students also participate in enterprise projects where they work in teams to develop products and services.
