Supported Studies Horticulture

UPDATED 20161020 11:53:58

The Horticulture programme is designed for young people aged 16-24, with moderate learning difficulties, working at entry level 3. The aim of the programme is to increase independent living, functional skills, vocational skills in the area of horticulture, and employability skills in order to access supported or open employment in the future. This programme is timetabled across three days. You will start college at 9am and finish at 2.30pm, 4.15pm or 4.30pm. The curriculum is based upon project-based learning, which means you will get actively involved in each session and have the opportunity to work in teams and individually. You won't just be sitting in a classroom you will be out and about in the community, collaborating with other groups from Supported Studies and other curriculum areas from across the college. You will learn through a variety of physical activity, participation, work experience and academic study. The Horticulture programme includes a range of vocationally related accredited units, which are subject to change each year, to suit the needs and aspirations of the group. During the course you will engage in one-day visits to parks or gardens to enhance your experience of large-scale gardening and planting schemes. You will visit Garden Centres to further develop your understanding of employment opportunities in horticulture and the kind of jobs that you might aspire to; these visits will also enhance your experience of the world of horticulture! All Supported Studies students are offered the chance to join our annual Summer Camp in June.
