FdA Supporting Learning & Teaching

UPDATED 20161020 10:04:07

This course will help students on the course to gain the expertise and experience to secure positions as learning support or teaching assistants. In the 21st century classroom, we now expect to find a range of professionals, led by the class teacher, who are there to promote and support the learning of pupils/students. Since the new common inspection framework from Ofsted 2012 will now focus specifically on learning and teaching, there will be an expectation that learning support professionals play a significant part in creating a thriving learning environment. It has been noted that schools are now advertising for graduate learning support assistants, in a drive to achieve excellence in the classroom. Therefore, this course provides the opportunity for learning support professionals to broaden their knowledge of learning and teaching, so they understand their role and that of the teacher, to help them to develop in the support role. This course will also provide an opportunity for established and successful teaching and learning support assistants, to progress to the top-up degree programme and then potentially to the PGCE for Primary Education or Early Years Education at university or there may also be the opportunity to engage in a Graduate Teaching Programme to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). A career in teaching in the lifelong learning sector is also possible, since there is a demand for people with these qualifications and experience to train new learning support professionals and New College Durham offers the Cert Ed/PGCE for the post-16 sector. Level: Level 4 and 5 Credit Value: 120 Awarded by: New College Durham Professional accreditation. This is a recognised foundation degree level qualification to help you demonstrate transferable graduate skills. It does not confer a specific professional status.
