Psychology is a fascinating and lively subject which uses scientific methods to study human behaviour and thinking. Combining research, literacy, statistical analysis and critical evaluation skills, it's a great launch-pad for a whole range of related science degrees, including forensics, criminology and occupational therapy. A qualification in Psychology will also be extremely valuable if you're planning a career in communications, culture, marketing, human resources, teaching or business. Initially, you will study the main approaches in psychology, and biopsychology in particular to gain a grounded foundation in the subject from considering conflicting and complementary explanations of behaviour. You will also study memory, attachment, social influence, psychopathology and research methods in the first year. A series of short and manageable practical experiments and tests accompany the areas of the syllabus and allow students to develop an active knowledge of the scientific aspects of psychology. In the second year students develop their understanding of Psychology, its uses and scientific methodology through selection of a choice of applications including forensic psychology, schizophrenia and cognitive development. Within these, students will carry out a range of practicals and small class tests.
