The aims of the A2 Level specification in Music encourages students to extend the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to communicate through music and to take part in making music; engage in, and extend their appreciation of, the diverse and dynamic heritage of music, promoting spiritual and cultural development; develop particular strengths and interests encouraging life-long learning and providing access to music-related and other careers; and Recognise the interdependence of musical skills, knowledge and understanding and the links between the activities of performing/realising, composing and appraising. They also encourage students to broaden experience, develop imagination, foster creativity and promote personal and social development. Students extend their performance skills, leading to a 12-15 minute recital. They develop their composition skills and build on their knowledge of harmony, culminating in a three-minute composition and a technical study. Set works focus on a knowledge and understanding of musical features, context and elements of continuity and change. Students learn how to compare and contrast music, contextualise music and identify harmonic and tonal features.
