Students should have a good command of English, demonstrated by a grade B or above in either GCSE English Language or History. Students should possess good powers of analysis and have an interest in current affairs and society. The course specification provides an approach to Government and Politics that allows candidates to acquire knowledge and understanding of the political dimension within their own and other societies. Candidates will develop an understanding of political systems and study different levels of government, comparing the practices of the British and United States systems of government. Candidates will have the opportunity to study different political ideologies and theories. This specification is designed to encourage candidates to: - develop their critical thinking skills and the ability to interpret, evaluate and comment - develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes acquire knowledge and understanding of the structures of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom and how these may differ from those of other political systems - acquire knowledge and informed understanding of the rights and responsibilities of the individual - develop an interest in and engagement with contemporary politics Contact: pharland@ashlyns.herts.sch.uk
