Before taking this course, you should feel confident that you have a broad interest in the wider world, be it curiosity about how a landscape has formed, or an interest in how a community might be affected by trans-national corporations. You must be motivated to expand your employability skills as well as your academic abilities. You should already feel confident in your literacy, numeracy and independent research skills. You need to be prepared to leave the classroom and see for yourself what is going on! You need to have studied GCSE Geography to take an Advanced GCE course in this subject. Students are required to achieve a B grade in both Geography and English GCSE. The course will provide an issues-based approach to studying geography, enabling students to explore and evaluate contemporary geographical questions and issues such as the consequences of globalisation, responses to hazards, water insecurity and climate change. Fieldwork - A minimum of 4 days fieldwork is required to support the A Level qualification. Coursework is based on the fieldwork investigation where students will conduct, present and analyse primary fieldwork and secondary data. A residential trip to Swanage will provide students with the opportunity to study a range of dynamic landscapes and places including the Jurassic Coast and urban geographies. International trips are also offered and include destinations such as Iceland. Contact: jcross@ashlyns.herts.sch.uk
