This 'History - The Changing Times of Canterbury Cathedral' course in Maidstone will allow you to discover how and why Canterbury Cathedral was built and will reveal something of the lives of those who have lived and worked there throughout its thousand year history. We will examine the cathedral's changing role - in both local and national society - its original purpose, its experience of the Dissolution and its story since. We will also look at cathedral life; the workings of a mediaeval monastery; the observation of the hours and the 'business' of a cathedral of its size. There will be separate sessions on the cathedral's magnificent stained glass, 'the monastery garden' and cathedral textiles, as well as a field trip to the cathedral, (at an additional cost of approximately £10.50 pp for a group visit or £15.50 pp for a guided tour), , By the end of this course, you should be able to:, , • Explain the history of Canterbury Cathedral from its foundations to the modern day, • Identify and describe the separate building phases of the cathedral , • Locate and describe the cathedral's major features and windows , • Describe and compare the changing functions of the cathedral over its thousand year history, • Discuss life in and around a mediaeval monastery,
