History - The England of Thomas Hardy

UPDATED 20161018 12:23:42

Thomas Hardy's long life spanned the later 19th and early 20th centuries but, despite his being born into an industrialised generation, his novels offer a view of a rural England, far removed from the urbanisation and mechanisation which engulfed the period. Hardy's own experiences - of life, love and a rural, agricultural society - can be clearly traced throughout his works, but does he provide an accurate representation of rural living and working conditions in the mid-late 1800s? This course will offer the opportunity to examine some of Hardy's novels in an attempt to discover more about the world he inhabited - its landscape, society and culture - and his unique view of it., , By the end of this course, you should be able to, • Place Thomas Hardy within the wider context of British history, • Describe key events in political, social and cultural history of the era, • Assess the value of literature as historical evidence, , (It is not essential, but might be useful, to have read one or all of the following texts before beginning this course: Far From the Madding Crowd; Tess of the D'Urbervilles; The Return of the Native), This course will suit anyone interested in the history of London or the Tudor period.
