Clothesmaking - Beginners

Have you been inspired to make your own clothes but don't know where to start? This course will familiarise you with using a sewing machine and introduce you to commonly used techniques for sewing and altering clothes. , If you are new to sewing you will start by making a bag and progress to a simple garment. For those with some experience and those continuing from Clothesmaking Beginners Term 1 or 2 you will make a dress and a garment of your choice as time permits., , This 10 week course focuses on:, • understanding fabric types, • using a sewing machine to perform basic stitches, • understanding a shop bought pattern, • using a pattern to make a garment that fits, • practising a variety of styling and finishing techniques, , This class is ideal for absolute beginners or those who need some extra confidence to restart using the sewing machine, as well as those who have completed term 1 and or term 2 of the Beginners course.

Entry requirements

A folder or document wallet is useful to keep handouts. You may want to bring some paper to take notes during demonstrations. For the first class please bring a piece of fabric to make a make a peg bag - size: 80cm x 50cm. This could be cut from an old sheet or cotton garment. You do not need to bring any special equipment to the first class. For subsequent classes you will be asked to bring a basic sewing kit. You will need to provide your own fabric and thread to make the garment, however, we advise you to complete the first week before purchasing any patterns or fabric., , Sewing Machines: Sewing machines are provided. If you wish to use your own sewing machine in the class, please bring a copy of the manual and ensure it has been recently serviced.
